Lanoxin (Digoxin) belongs to a class of drugs known as digitalis glycosides. It improves the strength and efficiency of your heart, which leads to better circulation of blood and reduction of the uncomfortable swelling that is common in people with congestive heart failure.

Uses

Digoxin (di JOX in) is used to treat heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). It helps the heart work better and it helps control your heart rate. Digoxin is also used to treat heart pain (angina) and may be used after a heart attack.

How to take

Digoxin comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day. Do not take this medicine within 1 hour of food high in fiber. Take exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Digoxin helps control your condition but will not cure it. Continue to take Digoxin even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Digoxin without talking to your doctor.

Side effects

Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome: Diarrhea; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; loss of appetite; nausea; vomiting; weakness. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: dizziness or lightheadedness; drowsiness, vision changes (blurred or yellow); rash, irregular heartbeat. Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience confusion, restlessness, agitation, unusual tiredness or weakness; loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fast/slow/irregular heartbeat; or changes in vision. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Seek medical attention right away if any of these severe side effects occur: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); heart disturbances, upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, swelling of the feet or hands; unusual weight gain. Symptoms of overdose may include changes in vision, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, weakness, and irregular heartbeat. If you suspect an overdose of Digoxin, seek medical attention immediately.

Precaution

Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Use of this medicine is not recommended if you have a history of ventricular fibrillation. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine. Do not stop taking this medicine without first checking with your doctor. Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine.

Drug interactions

Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following: Amiodarone, amphotericin B, anticholinergics (eg, propantheline), beta-blockers (eg, propranolol), bupivacaine, calcium, certain stimulants (eg, albuterol, amphetamine, pseudoephedrine), cyclosporine, diphenoxylate, diltiazem, diuretics (eg, hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide), indomethacin, itraconazole, macrolides (eg, erythromycin), propafenone, quinidine, quinine, spironolactone, succinylcholine, tetracyclines (eg, doxycycline), thioamines (eg, methimazole), or verapamil because side effects of Digoxin, especially on the heart, may be increased; Acarbose, certain anticancer medicines, cholestyramine, colestipol, kaolin-pectin, metoclopramide, penicillamine, rifampin, sulfasalazine, or thyroid hormones (eg, levothyroxine) because the effectiveness of Digoxin may be decreased; Oral aminoglycosides (eg, neomycin) because the actions and side effects of Digoxin may be increased or decreased; Spironolactone because it may interfere with certain lab tests for Digoxin blood levels and give false readings; or medicine for cancer or thyroid conditions. This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Digoxin may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of this medicine and remember the same day, take the missed dose. If you do not remember until the next day or if it is more than 12 hours since your missed dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Storage

Store Digoxin at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Digoxin out of the reach of children and away from pets.
